Short Biography, General

Larissa proudly passes on Métis and Jamaican ancestry to her daughter, Zyra. From Calgary, Larissa came to Tkaranto to complete a Bachelor of Arts double honours major in International Development and Communication Studies at York University and graduated in June 2018, Summa Cum Laude, with 2-year-old Zyra on her hip.

Following the experience of independently fundraising and starting a library in Accra, Ghana when in high school, Larissa was keen on internationalizing her post-secondary education. Experiences such as studying international law and volunteering in Istanbul, Turkey, and representing her university at several global United Nations events, contributed to earning the $100K of scholarships she used to fund her undergrad.

Larissa is an anti-racism and Indigenous researcher and activist working in policy advocacy. As the 2018 G7 Youth Head Delegate of Canada, Larissa lobbied successfully for the inclusion of Indigenous water advocacy in the G7 Summit. Larissa recently transitioned from an internship as an Indigenous Policy Advisor with the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Northern Development, and Mines to Advisor to the Ontario Anti-Racism Directorate, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. She also works as an Anti-Racism Associate Trainer with St. Stephen’s Community House; serves on the Toronto Police Services Anti-Racism Advisory Panel; and as Project Lead for York University’s race-based data collection initiative. Speaking globally to many audiences, Larissa uses her education and experience to empower others as a professional Public Speaker with Larissa Crawford Speaks.

Larissa's most recent work applies anti-racism and Indigenous approaches to renewable energy, climate change advocacy, and policy in Canada. She is an avid hiker, water activist, and is a published ribbon skirt artist.
